What is your role at UP Health System – Portage?
I am the director of facilities.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
My past experiences in construction, mining and manufacturing management were challenging and provided many growth opportunities, but I often found myself looking for a deeper sense of purpose. I was drawn to the healthcare environment where the innate desire to help others is found in every department and specifically drawn to the incredibly positive environment at UPHS – Portage.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
There is no typical day for Facilities, as we are presented with differing patient, employee and regulatory needs constantly. The buildings and their associated systems also define or shape significant portions of each day. It’s a busy and dynamic environment, so we are never really at rest or “coasting.” But that’s what I like best about it—change, variety and opportunities to help are constant, challenging and rewarding.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
Since May 2024, in this position only.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
The largest change has been personal—after only two days of work, I had to go through our Emergency, Imaging and Surgery departments and then spend a few days in Med/Surg recovering as a patient. Between this and being able to see just how much demanding, high-quality work our staff performs, I have gained an even deeper appreciation for our healthcare workers.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
Family time, walks and exploring lesser-traveled, hidden areas of the Keweenaw.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Portage?
Very easy—the people! UPHS – Portage is full of tireless, positive and professional people, making for easy collaboration and an excellent work environment.
