What is your title and role at UPHS-Portage?
I am a Dialysis Technician and have recently taken on another role of becoming a Biomedical Technician.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I was retiring from the Coast Guard and wanted to try something different and take a step out of my comfort zone. I really enjoy helping people, so becoming a Dialysis Tech checked all the boxes.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
My day starts with preparing our dialysis machines for our cancer patients. Then, I begin to help patients start their treatment and begin caring for them during the course of their treatment. Once noon hits, our pace begins to pick up as we change over from morning to afternoon patients. Working in Dialysis is very fast-paced most days and they usually fly by.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have been employed for 6 months and this is the first job I have had in healthcare. So far, I am really enjoying it.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
The biggest change was transiting from a career in the military to a civilian job in healthcare, they are very different culturally and it has been a big change for me.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What/where is your favorite local gem?
Anything outdoors really; camping, hiking, fishing, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing are a few of my favorites. I also enjoy working on our homestead with my wife and our daughter.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Portage?
The people, patients, and coworkers are what I enjoy most. I have always thought the people around you make or break any job, more so than what you are doing at work.
