What is your role at UPHS – Portage?
I am a certified surgical technologist in the surgery department at Portage.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
Initially, a labor and delivery nurse inspired me to go into the healthcare field. My interest grew as I experienced one of the most stressful things — a loved one or friend that is sick. I always wanted to provide care for them and help put their minds at ease.
What's a typical day like for you?
It is difficult to explain a typical day because every day in the operating room is different. It's a fast-paced work environment and can be stressful at times.
How long have you been employed here?
I have been a part of the surgery department for 10 years, but have worked in other areas of the hospital on and off since 2001.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to complete on-the-job training as a surgical tech. I was able to finish school and obtain my certification — most recently I have been able to add to my skills and train as a surgical first assist. I am grateful for the opportunities here at Portage.
What are some of your interests outside of work? Where is your favorite local gem?
When I am not at work, I enjoy spending time with my family — we love the outdoors. I love to sit on the beach, pick berries, and hike. We also love to take a ride up to Bete Gris.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Portage?
I enjoy being a part of the OR family and taking care of our community. The community is like family to us.
