What is your role at UPHS – Portage?

My role at PortagePointe (connected to UP Health System – Portage) is an elder associate.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?

My mother has worked here for many years and I remember her bringing me here for trick or treating or to visit when I was a little kid. Seeing the great work she does from such an early age and somewhat following in her footsteps was my inspiration for getting into the healthcare field.

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?

A typical work day for me starts with receiving a report from the prior shift. I then would spend most of the workday assisting my elders with anything and everything they may need, getting chores done in between and writing down what I would need to document later. Then normally more so near the end of the night, I’d spend a fair amount of time documenting everything I did throughout the day. Lastly, I would pass along anything of importance to the oncoming shift. I would say working in this field is very busy at times, but overall rewarding.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?

I’ve been employed here for about eight and a half years, and I’ve been in the same position since I started.

What are some of the big changes you've experienced in this position?

I would say the biggest change that I am currently experiencing, is the addition of a new kitchen to PortagePointe. I don’t recall anything being added to the building like this since I became an elder associate.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?

Outside of work, I like fishing, hiking, biking and exercising—basically anything outdoors. My favorite local gem is Suomi; I’ve loved going there for breakfast ever since I was in high school.

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Portage?

What I enjoy most about working here is talking with my elders and hearing all of the great stories and experiences that they have garnered throughout their lifetimes.
