What is your role at UPHS – Portage?
I am a nursing supervisor at UP Health System – Portage (UPHS – Portage).
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I enjoy working with people and healthcare seemed like a great job to do that. I also thought it would be a good career to be able to work anywhere, but most importantly to get a good job locally.
What's a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
There are no two days alike in the supervisor role. We get pulled in so many different directions and we never know what may come next. It is an extremely difficult job at times, but it is very rewarding as well. We can make a big difference in a patient's care, and that is something that keeps me motivated every day.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have been employed at Portage for five years. I started in the Intensive Care Unit and then was hired as one of the nursing supervisors from there.
What are some of the big changes you've experienced in this position?
Healthcare has changed drastically in the last five years. One big thing I have noticed is that people are doing more of their research on topics and advocating for different things in their healthcare.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite gem?
I enjoy spending time with my wife and kids, being outdoors, hunting and fishing. I also enjoy tending to our animals; my wife and I have a small hobby farm. One of my favorite places to go to is Silver Mountain.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Portage?
What I enjoy most about working at Portage is the culture we have. We have such a great team here, and everyone is always striving to do what's best for the patient. It is an enjoyable place to work because of the great people that work here.
