What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am a registered nurse on the adult behavioral unit at UP Health System – Marquette (UPHS – Marquette).
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I was exploring different majors while bartending when my landlord, a gastrointestinal nurse, recommended I go into nursing. I transferred to community college and started pre-nursing prerequisites the next year. I found bartending and psychiatric nursing to have similarities—both require listening and treating people equitably. I’m grateful I followed through and found something I’m passionate about.
What's a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
My main responsibility is to maintain patient safety and provide emotional support. This specialty of nursing requires empathy, patience and effective communication. What I love most about this field is building rapport with people who are distrustful of the healthcare system.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have worked at UPHS – Marquette for four and a half years. I moved to Marquette in September 2020 and have since transitioned to a contingent position in the inpatient behavioral health unit.
What are some of the big changes you've experienced in this position?
Relocating from urban healthcare to rural healthcare has been the biggest change for me. The availability of providers and outpatient follow-up care is not as easily reachable for our population.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite gem?
I enjoy hiking, biking and practicing yoga. I’m enthusiastic about backpacking and camping with my partner. I have a large collection of houseplants, a 2-year-old chocolate Lab, and I’m learning how to cross-country ski. A major reason I relocated to Marquette was its proximity to the North Country Trail, Lake Superior and Isle Royale — my local gems.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
The friendships I have built with the staff have been a highlight of working at UPHS – Marquette. Our specialty is unpredictable and being able to rely on your peers can make or break your shift.
