Toni Pellonpaa, a nurse on the Intensive Care Unit at UP Health System – Marquette.
What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I wanted to be able to help people and have a career that’s needed all over the country.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
As a nurse in the ICU, I care for critically ill patients so a typical day includes a fast-paced environment that requires me to always be on top of my game. This field is mentally and physically challenging but just as equally rewarding.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have worked here at UP Health System as a nurse for about two and a half years, and one year as a Care Aide before that.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
The pandemic redefined the field of nursing for me. I am so proud of the level of resiliency that my coworkers and I have possessed through all of the devastations that COVID-19 has caused this past year. Seeing everyone on our unit come together and support each other through the loss and hardships has been remarkable.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I enjoy spending time with my two dogs and watching as many sunrises and sunsets as I can. My favorite local gem includes going out for a post-night-shift breakfast with my coworkers.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
I enjoy working alongside my coworkers – many have become lifelong friends of mine. I also love being able to care for members of our community.
