Owen Culpepper is an Intensivist in the ICU at UP Health System – Marquette.
What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am an Intensivist in the ICU at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
The field of medicine and healthcare is always evolving and there are always ways to improve both myself and others and to improve ways of accomplishing things. I also feel that healthcare is a way to directly help and positively impact others in my community.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
I start my day with the overnight provider to get updates on patients and information on existing patients. Next, I review and address acute issues prior to multi-disciplinary rounds. Then, I follow up on orders from rounds and address other acute changes in patients, performing bedside procedures in the ICU as needed. After discussing patient care needs with consulting providers, I continue addressing any critical needs and attend to new patients if any arrive in the ICU.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I began working here in my current position in August 2020.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
A big change was transitioning from fellow to attending physician.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my girlfriend, cooking, going to local restaurants, visiting family, and watching movies. My favorite local gem is the Iron Ore Heritage Trail.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
My coworkers, patients, and the close-knit feel of a community hospital. I’m also proud to work in a facility that is capable of offering high-quality acute care right here in our community.
