What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am a Licensed Practical Nurse in the Adult Psychiatric Unit (APU) at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
When I was 18 years old, I was giving my baby up for adoption. At this point in my life, I wasn’t aware of all my options. The RN in the Family Birthing Unit sat down with me and made sure I understood what all my options were. I changed my mind about the adoption and raised her as a single parent. I believe this nurse had a tremendous impact on my life and will never know how grateful I was for her. This has inspired me to get into nursing and help make a positive impact on people.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
Every day is different and challenging with patients. Most of my job consists of keeping patients and other staff safe, administering medications, and assisting with de-escalations. Teamwork is extremely important in this field in order to maintain safety. At times it can become very stressful and intense.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have been employed at UP Health System for three years now. I started as an LPN in the float pool. After participating in all types of patient care, behavioral health was very interesting to me and I transferred to the APU a year later.
What are some of the significant changes you have experienced in this position?
During my time working in APU, I have been exposed to so many different disorders, and recognizing the different effects they can have on individuals is an experience of a lifetime. Mental health is a large part of our overall health and is just as essential as physical health. While it's often misjudged and stigmatized, it's important to remember that mental health concerns are real and all individuals matter.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I enjoy spending time with my family near and far, camping, camping, and anything outdoors. My very favorite local gem is Lake Superior which I have everlasting memories with.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
Other staff members are very helpful and if they can’t help you they will find someone who can. Also, I have always loved the “no pass zone” rule which I was taught from day one of my employment. We do not have call lights on our floor but when I have to go to a different floor for something, I still follow the “no pass zone" rule—it could save a life.
