What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am a Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist (CNMT) and Lead Technologist at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I really liked chemistry and health science classes in college so healthcare seemed like a natural career choice.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
Nuclear medicine is such a dynamic field as it is always evolving and growing. Every day is different, which I feel is typical when working with patients. We have three other areas in Nuclear Medicine, Nuclear Cardiology, General Nuclear (which is all organ systems except cardiac), and PET/CT. Having our department in different areas of the hospital keeps us running from one side of the hospital to the other, so our job is never boring.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have been a nuclear medicine technologist here for 30 years.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
PET/CT imaging has been the biggest growth in Nuclear Medicine and I’m proud that we have been able to offer it for over 20 years. If we didn’t offer it here, patients would have to travel out of the area for care. Our team has always tried to keep up with all the technological advancements such as new isotopes and procedures that have developed over the years.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I love almost any activity outdoors. I hike, kayak, paddleboard, and fish. In the winter I love to snowshoe. I also really enjoy reading and traveling. My favorite gem is all the trails throughout Marquette; there is always someplace new to discover.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
My coworkers are some of my favorite people in the world. They are friends at work and outside of work, so that makes coming here every day a pleasure. It is also great to work with all the other amazing staff this hospital employs and to meet new people every day in my day-to-day patient encounters.
