Jamie Armstrong, Marquette Courier at UP Health System – Marquette.
What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am the Marquette Courier with the Logistics Department at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I started as a patient transporter and was able to interact with patients and their families and see many different aspects of healthcare. Now as a courier, I’m not as much directly working with patients but I know that in my own way, my position is still involved with patient care.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
Every day is busy. I work based on a set schedule so hospital clients usually know when I’ll arrive. I deliver and pick up supplies, mail, specimens, blood inventory, and more all around town. Besides hospitals, local doctor’s offices, and clinics, I also stop at the post office, bank, and courthouse. Because I’m going all over town all day, I might also do extra errands for the hospital, if time permits.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I started in the Logistics Department as a Patient Transporter over 19 years ago, filling in on some of the courier routes. I took over as the Marquette Courier about 12 years ago.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
The transition from the old hospital to the new hospital was pretty challenging at first. But now with Marquette’s new streets and roundabouts, deliveries to and from the hospital’s new location can be made easily — apart from road construction.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
Outside of work, I like hunting, fishing, and watching sunsets at the beach with family and friends. The Chocolay River is my “local gem.” Anybody who knows me well can usually find me somewhere close to the river!
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
I enjoy all the different places and people I get to see during the day. I’m on a schedule so my stops are quick, but I usually have a chance to catch up and share a story. I like being known as the “can-do guy,” and I do my best to help or know who to call if I can’t.
