What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am the Pulmonary Function Technician at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
When I was in the Coast Guard, I went to a 3-week EMT program and I really liked it. That steered me into Respiratory Therapy (RT).
What's a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
I test patients for asthma, COPD and various respiratory issues, as well as caloric measurements for the Bariatric Center. I maintain the lab equipment.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I worked for about 25 years in RT doing patient care (an awesome group of dedicated people) and the last 10 years working in the pulmonary function lab in the MOB.
What are some of the big changes you've experienced in this position?
Working independently was a bit of a change from being part of a team (I am a one-person department). The COVID pandemic threw all the RTs for a loop.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite gem?
I love to spend time with my wife, daughter and grandson. Hanging out on our pontoon is so much fun with all the great places to explore. Deer Lake is one of our favorites.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
The patients. Educating and working with patients is a privilege. Some of their stories and challenges are truly inspiring.
