Carol Holman, MHA, RD, Director of Food & Nutrition at UP Health System — Marquette.
What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am the Director of Food & Nutrition at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
When I was hired by what was then Marquette General Hospital as a Nutrition Technician, I enjoyed working with patients and seeing the positive impact of my work. That job won me over to the field of healthcare, and later I was accepted to an internship for Clinical and Administrative Dietetics.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
Each day is different. I have the opportunity to oversee one of the largest “restaurants” in the UP while focusing on the nutrition care of our patients.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have worked here for 35 years. After working as an Inpatient & Outpatient Dietitian, I was promoted to be Assistant Director and then Director of the department. I also once served as the Director for Purchasing, Bulk Stores, & Print Shop.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
The transition to the new hospital was a great adventure and opportunity.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I like to stay active and love the outdoors. My father lives next door which is a blessing! My favorite local gem is Sugarloaf – many great hiking memories!
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
I enjoy my part in the treatment process for our patients and helping them to heal. Also, the team of employees in Food Service — the staff are so hard-working and dedicated!
