Anna Dorr, Department Support Assistant for the Imaging Department at UP Health System – Marquette.
What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am the Department Support Assistant for the Imaging Department at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I’ve always enjoyed clerical work and I love to talk with people. Coming in for testing can be stressful. It’s satisfying to be able to help someone and I do what I can to make the process easier for both the patients and our Imaging staff.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
We’re always busy in the Imaging Department. I usually start the day by finalizing orders and printing schedules for that day. Next, I work on the charges from the day before, then my team and I prepare for upcoming orders. Meanwhile, we greet and process patients and take care of phone requests. It’s fast-paced but there’s never a dull moment – it’s a lot of fun.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I started in the lab processing room in 1986 but moved to the Imaging Department the next year. I’ve worked both day and afternoon shifts, covering the film room and front office.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
Like many others working in the field of healthcare, technology! Back in the day, we used to have rooms full of film, with physical x-rays for the radiologists to read. We’d obtain and mail out comparison images and physically file STACKS of reports. Now, we are able to use the computer for much of the work.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
Enjoying the Upper Peninsula! I love to walk and “shoot” birds – with my camera. I can often be found on Eagle’s Nest Road with my husband and dog, or along Powder Mill Road looking for wildlife.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
I love the people – both my coworkers and the patients. Having worked here so many years, there are patients that I recognize and have a nice rapport with. I love to see all the smiles, even if they’re behind a mask!
