UPHS – Marquette Heroes | Andrew Johns, RN
January 6, 2023

What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
My grandfather was a doctor, and my grandmother was an RN. I always loved listening to the stories that they would tell about their experiences in healthcare, and knew that's what I wanted to do, too.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
A typical day includes conducting audits, going to meetings, rounding, and checking on staff. I enjoy talking to our patients and making sure they have everything they need.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have been off and on here for about seven years, starting on neuro, ortho and peds for about three and a half years. Then I worked in rehab for two years before starting in my current position, where I have been for a little over a year.
What are some of the significant changes you have experienced in this position?
Moving from a floor nurse into a management position has been a big change. When the previous manager left as the floor director, I had to take over as the resource person for the staff—it's challenging but rewarding work.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I enjoy spending time with friends and family, and spending my days off fishing, camping or hiking the trails along pictured rocks.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
My coworkers make working here a wonderful experience.
