UPHS – Marquette Hero: Mark Young

After starting his career with UPHS – Marquette in the laundry department, Mark Young felt the pull to work in a field where he could impact patients more directly. So, after 7 1/2 years, he transferred over to patient transport where he has served UPHS – Marquette for the last 21 years. During that span, he’s become a mainstay on the night shift, working from 11:30 p.m until the morning. 

“I love it,” he said. “I just like the relaxed atmosphere. Everybody that works at night just looks out for each other. We’re like a family; everybody gets along. I look forward to coming to work.”

What’s a typical day like for you?

I start taking calls off the bed watch. Patients may need transporting, food delivery or just getting around. When the ER is busy, I am busy. Taking patients from the CT to the floor, or sometimes from the PACU to the floor. It’s a lot of transporting and making sure everyone is all right. If the nurses need anything, then they will let me know and I will try to get them what they need.

What’s your position been like transitioning to the new hospital?

It’s been pretty easy. After working in the old hospital for 27 years and then coming here, this place is so much easier getting used to and learning the layout. It’s easier to lead people where they have to go. And all of the private rooms are so much nicer. It’s just beautiful.

How would you describe working on a night shift?

I like how every night’s different. You could have a slow night or you could have a crazy busy night. You meet so many different types of people. You get to deal with people and different personalities and that’s nice.

What are some of your interests outside of work?

I like to golf and play tennis and stuff like that. I’m always at Northern Michigan hockey games; I’ve been going to their games for over 30 years. Most people may know I’m a big NMU hockey fan, but people might not know I like to golf and play tennis. 

What is your favorite part about working at UPHS?

Just caring for all the people. Whether it’s employees or patients. It’s nice to hear all the positive things that people say, and this is very gratifying.
