Judy Smith is a surgical nurse at UP Health System – Bell.
What is your title and role at UPHS – Bell?
I am a surgical nurse at UP Health System – Bell, and I am currently working in the outpatient surgical area where I help with admitting and discharging patients.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I was very young when my father had Pneumonia, during that time he had to be hospitalized. It was this event that gave me the desire to be a nurse. I really disliked school and feared the unknown- but my desire to be a Nurse was greater than my fears.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
Every day is a little different and each patient is unique. I spend a lot of time helping patients get ready for their surgery or to head home. During those times, I hope that I have alleviated some of their fears of the unknown.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have been a nurse for 45 years at UP Health System – Bell. I began on the night shift medical floor, then in the Pediatrics Department until 1990, and finally, I made my final move to the Surgical Department.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
There is constant change in the medical field, and we always need to keep up with those changes.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What/where is your favorite local gem?
I am very involved with my children and my grandchildren. I also love and look forward to traveling with friends and visiting with my relatives.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Bell?
I enjoy seeing my coworkers every day, they are my Bell Family.
