What is your role at UPHS – Portage?
I am the Dialysis Department Coordinator for UP Health System – Portage.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I've always wanted to work in the healthcare setting, even as a child. When I was little my dream was to be a brain surgeon — that did not pan out, but I am still thankful I get to help people out in dialysis.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
A typical day in dialysis changes from day to day. My job duties range from paperwork, billing, support staff, schedules and many other odds and ends. I enjoy the ever-so-changing duties — it keeps my job exciting. I also enjoy interacting with all of our patients. Hearing their stories and their past gives you a new appreciation and outlook on life.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have been employed here at Portage for almost five years. I started in dialysis as a technician. I wanted to help out and be more involved, so I cross-trained for the medical receptionist position. After three and a half years with the two positions, I then was offered my current position — Dialysis Department Coordinator.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
I've learned to step out of my comfort zone. I feel as though I have learned to look at things in a new and different way, and have become a more confident individual.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I really love spending time with my kids and husband. We love going on kayak and vacation trips, and spending as much time together as we can. One of my favorite local gems is Urban Rustics and Steep and Brew Coffee — they have the best coffee and make great gift ideas.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Portage?
What I enjoy most are the friendships I have made and the conversations I have had with my patients. We really do have the best group of coworkers!
