UP Health System – Portage Sleep Medicine Receives American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) Accreditation
March 12, 2024

UP Health System – Portage (UPHS – Portage) Sleep Medicine is pleased to announce its sleep center has received the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) accreditation for another five years. This status demonstrates our commitment to high-quality, patient-centered care for those who are suffering from sleep disorders.
To receive and maintain accreditation for a five-year period, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards for professional healthcare as designated by the AASM. This includes quality standards set for personnel, facility and equipment, policies and procedures, data acquisition, patient care and quality assurance.
The Sleep Center at UPHS – Portage is a full-service sleep lab that specializes in clinical evaluation and follow-up of sleep-related problems like sleep apnea, narcolepsy, insomnia, CPAP education, restless leg syndrome, and in-home sleep apnea tests. For millions of Americans, restful sleep doesn’t always come easily for a variety of reasons. But for some, there may be an underlying medical condition causing sleep disruptions that can be diagnosed and treated.
With the recent addition of Michael Sand, DO, UPHS - Portage sleep medicine medical director, and Martha Frankowski, MD, the facility can continue to offer a robust sleep medicine program.
“We are thrilled to recertify our accreditation with AASM for another five years,” said Dr. Sand. “Many people don’t connect the dots between the quality of their sleep and their overall health. Our team is here to help make those connections, and we look forward to continue helping the patients in the Upper Peninsula find solutions for more restful sleep and improved overall health and well-being.”
The Sleep Center at UPHS – Portage is located at 890 Campus Drive, Ste B, Hancock, MI. Patients who are interested in a sleep study are encouraged to talk with their primary care provider to ensure its right for them. A physician referral is required.
“I am proud of our commitment to making communities healthier every day. The dedication from our providers and staff is why we were able to be recertified by AASM for another five years,” said Ryan Heinonen, chief executive officer, UPHS – Portage.
