What is your role at UP Health System – Portage?

I am a surgical first assistant in the operating room (OR).

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?

I originally was going to be a nurse, and when I shadowed in OR I was hooked. I wanted to be one of the team members standing at the table.

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?

Our days are ever-changing. We care for patients having both elective and emergency surgery. I help prepare the OR and position our patients with the help of my amazing team. I am the surgeon's second set of hands during procedures. I am here to provide exposure for them to work, help maintain hemostasis, retract, suture, tie, and do anything else they may need to ensure a safe and successful outcome.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?

It will be 14 years in March. I started as a surgical technologist and am now a surgical first assistant.

What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?

Fourteen years is not a long time, but so much has changed, I feel. For me directly, I went from being a surgical technologist to a surgical first assistant. Medicine is ever-changing, most notably when it comes to technology. Technology has enhanced our instrumentation and equipment utilization. We are moving between open surgery, laparoscopy and now robotic surgery on a daily basis.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?

My interests outside of work involve boating, wake surfing, water skiing, mountain biking, cross-country skiing and cooking. My husband and I also own a local business, Flowers by Sleeman. So, I think my favorite local gem is our store.

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Portage?

I love my job. I love what I do. I get to help the community and work with a group of wonderful hard-working individuals who are always willing to help each other.
