UP Health System – Portage Adds Board-Certified Sleep Medicine Physician, Martha Frankowski, MD, to its Sleep Medicine Team
April 8, 2024

UP Health System – Portage (UPHS – Portage) is pleased to announce the addition of Sleep Medicine Physician, Martha Frankowski, MD, to its sleep medicine team. Board-certified in sleep medicine, Dr. Frankowski will provide diagnosis and treatment for restless leg syndrome, narcolepsy, insomnia, rapid eye movement behavior disorder, sleep apnea and all other sleep disorders (ages 18-65+) through a combination of in-person and telehealth appointments at UPHS – Portage.
Dr. Frankowski earned her Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. She continued with her post-graduate internship and neurology residency, along with her fellowship in neuromuscular and clinical neurophysiology, also at Wayne State University.
For millions of Americans, restful sleep doesn’t always come easily for a variety of reasons. But for some, there may be an underlying medical condition causing sleep disruptions that can be diagnosed and treated. When Dr. Frankowski first started as a sleep medicine physician her philosophy was, “sleep well to live well,” and to this day, she continues to encourage this with her patients.
“Sleep health is integral to each individual's life—not only to feel better but also to improve underlying conditions they may have dealt with for a long time,” said Dr. Frankowski. “There is nothing better than hearing from my patients their treatment plans are working, and they are feeling better. I truly love educating the community on sleep and I am excited to bring my passion and expertise to patients in the Upper Peninsula.”
Dr. Frankowski joins Michael Sand, DO, and the UP Health System – Marquette Neurophysiology & Sleep Lab to help expand the program’s sleep medicine services.
Dr. Sand earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL, before completing his residency training in family medicine at McLaren Macomb Hospital in Mount Clemens, MI, where he spent one year as chief resident. Dr. Sand then went on to complete his sleep medicine fellowship at the University of Michigan (Michigan Medicine) in Ann Arbor.
He diagnoses and treats sleep disorders—such as sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy and restless leg syndrome in adults and children ages four and older through a variety of sleep tests and studies.
“Poor sleep and sleep disorders have been found to play a role in high blood pressure, heart disease, strokes, cognitive impairment and more,” said Dr. Sand. “The addition of Dr. Frankowski provides residents of the Upper Peninsula access to high-quality care and also demonstrates UPHS – Portage’s commitment to expanding and diversifying healthcare services in the region. Patients in need of specialized sleep medicine care now have a valuable resource right here in our community.”
Dr. Frankowski and Dr. Sand will see patients at the UP Health System – Portage Visiting Clinic, located at 500 Campus Dr., Ste. 5, Hancock, MI. Patients interested in scheduling a clinic appointment should call 906.483.1730. A referral is necessary before scheduling.
