She specializes in supportive care for cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy, focusing on monitoring side effects, providing patient education, coordinating care and conducting follow-up appointments.
Emilee Syrjala, MSN, NP-C, is a board-certified nurse practitioner (NP-C). Emilee received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Northern Michigan University in 2020 and earned her Master of Science in Nursing: Family Nurse Practitioner from the same institution in 2023.
"I have spent the last five years as a registered nurse at UPHS – Marquette," Emilee shares. "The patient population in the UP is very special to me. It gives me great pride to continue to give back to the community I have been raised in," she adds. "I look forward specifically to caring for radiation oncology patients in the UP."
Radiation oncology is a major part of the multidisciplinary approach to cancer treatment. The therapy uses various forms of radiation to treat cancer and other diseases as safely and effectively as possible. It works by damaging the genetic material within cancer cells, after which the cancer cells are not able to grow and spread and the body naturally removes them. Each treatment is unique to the individual and uses advanced, precise technology to target tumors with minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
As an affiliate of Duke Medicine, UPHS – Marquette | Cancer Center providers have access to the latest research and treatment options from the Duke Cancer Institute, and our patients have access to the safest, most advanced cancer services.
Emilee finds the most compelling aspect of her role as a medical care provider is forming meaningful relationships with her patients and their family members, all while providing high-quality care.
Outside of work, Emilee enjoys spending time with friends and family.
Emilee joins radiation oncologist, Eric Schaff, MD, and will closely work with UP Health System’s entire Cancer Center team, which includes hematologists/oncologists, dosimetrists, radiation therapists, oncology nurses and more, to provide care and determine treatment plans.
