UP Health System – Marquette Welcomes Critical Care Pulmonologist Sara Meehan, MD

UP Health System – Marquette is pleased to welcome Critical Care Pulmonologist Sara Meehan, MD, to its Respiratory Medicine team. Dr. Meehan provides comprehensive consultation, diagnoses, and treatment of diseases of the lungs and respiratory system—such as asthma and COPD—and offers pulmonary function testing and chest imaging interpretation, among other services. 

Board-certified in pulmonology and critical care medicine, Dr. Meehan completed her Doctorate in Medicine (MD) from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Human Medicine, followed by residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, TX. She then went on to complete her fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, also at the University of Texas Southwestern. Prior to joining UP Health System, she worked as an intensivist at UNC Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC.

With family ties to the Upper Peninsula, Dr. Meehan is glad to be living and practicing in the Marquette community. “Our extended family is from the Upper Peninsula, and we have always loved visiting. When the opportunity presented itself, we knew that we wanted to make it our home,” she said. “As a provider, I strive to do all that I can to help people improve their quality of life as much as possible.” 

Dr. Meehan also specializes in shortness of breath, unexplained cough, lung cancer screening, thoracentesis, and bronchoscopy—a minimally invasive procedure that allows providers to examine the inside of the lungs in order to diagnose disease, treat airway blockages, or take biopsies for further testing. She also provides care to critically ill patients in the intensive care unit.

Outside of work, Dr. Meehan and her family love the outdoors—particularly hiking and winter activities. "I grew up speedskating in Chicago and am excited to get back on the ice." 

She joins Pulmonologists Matthew Karulf, MD, and Marykay Lehman, MD, as well as Laura Leckelt, NP, and Cassidy Thomas, PA-C, at UP Medical Group | Marquette Respiratory Medicine, located at 1414 W. Fair Ave., Ste. 211.
