UP Health System – Marquette Welcomes Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Cemil Purut, MD
July 26, 2021

MARQUETTE, MI | JULY 27, 2021 | UP Health System – Marquette is pleased to welcome Cemil Purut, MD, to its Cardiovascular Surgery team. Dr. Purut joins our heart and vascular service line from Salem, VA, where he served as Medical Director of Cardiovascular Surgery for Lewis-Gale Medical Center. Dr. Purut sees patients seeking treatment for heart and lung conditions that may require surgical intervention, including heart bypass surgery, aortic valve replacement, mitral valve repair, carotid artery surgery, and adult congenital heart surgery.
Dr. Purut earned a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University before completing his Doctor of Medicine degree at Duke University. He went on to fulfill his residency and internship in surgery and his fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Duke as well. He has served in progressive leadership roles throughout his practice experience.
“The addition of Dr. Purut to our Heart and Vascular team reinforces our relationship with the Duke Heart Network. He brings the latest resources and leadership experience from one of the nation’s top cardiovascular programs,” said Gar Atchison, CEO and Market President of UP Health System.
Dr. Purut strives to foster a personal, patient-centered relationship with every one of his patients by closely following each step of their care. “Every patient should be treated like family,” Dr. Purut says of his care philosophy. “That means being with them before and after their surgery. I involve myself in every aspect of the patient’s care. Nothing is left to chance, that’s how you achieve quality patient outcomes.”
On moving to Marquette, Dr. Purut says the decision was an easy one. “Anywhere I can practice in an outstanding facility, provide a significant need for the community, and be surrounded by such natural beauty is where I want to be,” he says. “The Upper Peninsula provides a great lifestyle.” In his time outside of work, Dr. Purut enjoys mountain biking, hiking, and downhill skiing.
Dr. Purut joins cardiothoracic surgeons Dr. Bradford Blakeman and Dr. Daniel De Oliveira; and will work closely with UP Health System’s team of cardiologists to determine surgical appropriateness and establish follow-up care.
