UP Health System – Marquette Welcomes Cardiologists Ellen Kehoe, DO, and Yasser Salem, MD, MBA, to Heart & Vascular Center

UP Health System – Marquette (UPHS – Marquette), a Duke LifePoint hospital, is pleased to welcome two seasoned cardiologists to its Heart & Vascular Center — Ellen Kehoe, DO, and Yasser Salem, MD, MBA, FACC, FACP. Dr. Kehoe and Dr. Salem provide general cardiology services, including comprehensive consultation, diagnoses and treatment of diseases and conditions of the heart and vascular system — such as congestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation.
Board certified in cardiology and internal medicine, Dr. Kehoe graduated from Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI, with a Bachelor of Science and a Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine. Following medical school, she completed her residency in internal medicine at Metropolitan Central and a fellowship in cardiology at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, both in Philadelphia, PA.
After providing locum (temporary) coverage at UPHS – Marquette for more than a year, Dr. Kehoe fell in love with the Upper Peninsula (UP) and decided to become a permanent member of the team. “Everyone I’ve met here — staff, patients and community members alike — has been wonderfully welcoming,” said Dr. Kehoe. “I am happy to provide much-needed care for cardiology patients in the UP. My goal as a provider is to reassure my patients and help them better understand and cope with their medical issues."
Dr. Kehoe brings more than 40 years of experience practicing medicine and has held various cardiology positions in Portland, ME, Lansing, MI, and Mount Pleasant, MI, where she still owns and operates her private cardiology practice.
Dr. Salem is board certified in internal medicine, cardiology, and advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology, and is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and American College of Cardiology. He completed his medical education and some postdoctoral training at Alexandria University Hospitals in Alexandria, Egypt. After leaving Egypt, he moved to the United States and completed both his residency in internal medicine and his cardiovascular disease fellowship at the Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University in Chicago, IL. Following his medical education and training, Dr. Salem was the director of cardiovascular services for Aurora Health Care in Marinette, WI, where he later opened his own clinic that is still operational.
"The best part of my job is having the opportunity to make a difference in people's lives and seeing their health and quality of life improve,” said Dr. Salem. “I'm grateful to be part of the friendly and passionate team here whose biggest goal aligns with mine — to put the patient at the center of care."
Additionally, Drs. Kehoe and Salem will soon offer Lasix injections — a medication used to reduce fluid retention from the body — within the Heart & Vascular Center. Also known as edema, extra fluid within the body can be caused by conditions such as heart failure, liver disease, kidney disease and more. Depending on its location, the fluid buildup can cause painful swelling, stretched skin and shortness of breath. Controlling the edema with injections can provide relief for patients, reduce long-term damage, and keep them out of the emergency department.
“Adding Dr. Kehoe and Dr. Salem to our Heart & Vascular Center team has been a huge win for both UPHS – Marquette and the UP region,” said Tonya Darner, MBA, chief executive officer, UPHS – Marquette. “Their years of experience will be a tremendous asset to our staff, patients and community while improving access to timely cardiovascular services.”
Drs. Kehoe and Salem join the skilled and experienced team of more than 30 providers in the UPHS – Marquette Heart & Vascular Center, located at 850 W. Baraga Ave, Ste. 20, Marquette, MI 49855. Dr. Salem will also provide care in Delta County at UPHS – Doctors Park, 710 S. Lincoln Rd., Escanaba, MI 49829.
