UP Health System - Marquette Heroes | Sarah Hooper, RN

What is your role at UP Health System?
I am a Registered Nurse (RN) in the staffing pool at UP Health System – Marquette. The staffing pool is a group of nurses and care aides who are cross-trained to work all across the hospital. We float to the unit that needs our help that day. I am trained to work on all of the medical/surgical units along with the emergency department, intensive care unit, step-down unit, neonatal intensive care unit and adult behavioral health.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
When choosing a career I knew I wanted to serve and help my community, especially children and families. I am a Certified Pediatric Nurse and have focused many areas of my career and training on pediatrics. My mom is also a nurse and played a big role in my path to being a nurse.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
In the morning I find out which unit I will be working on that day. Of course, I start my day with coffee (lots of coffee). I arrive and take a patient assignment for my 12-hour shift. Shifts are very busy juggling many aspects of care including taking vitals and assessing patients, passing medications, assisting with personal care and treatments, communicating with the healthcare team and family, and documentation. Occasionally, I will be needed on a different unit and float there part-way through my shift. I have learned so many nursing skills and how to care for many different patient populations through floating throughout the hospital.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have been employed in the staffing pool at UP Health System – Marquette for four years. I have been a nurse for nine years.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
Witnessing the before, during, and aftermath of the pandemic has been quite the experience. I am amazed at how the nurses, doctors, and direct care staff came together to care for our community during uncertain times.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I love to spend time with my husband, two kids, an Australian shepherd, and extended family. I spend most of my free time camping, hiking, and reading. I also love to travel when I get the opportunity but mostly enjoy visiting local gems such as Little Presque/Wetmore Landing, Presque Isle, and Kitch-iti-Kipi.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
I love the connections I make as a bedside nurse and enjoy caring for my community. I have gotten to know a majority of the staff throughout the hospital and value all of the connections I have made.
