What is your role at UPHS?
I am a clinic office clerk in Medical Records at UP Medical Group – Marquette Family Medicine.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
When I was looking for a career after school, the hospital was where everyone wanted to work. I had always worked in food service in high school and after. I learned that there was an opening in the Dietary department and thought I should go where I could get insurance and benefits—and that's where my career all started back in 1987.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
Like any other job throughout the hospital, there’s no typical day. It seems like you learn something new every day, or something changes every day. It’s very interesting and challenging when there are always improvements in technology—something that I didn’t have training on when I moved from Dietary to Marquette Family Medicine.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I started working in Dietary and then I went to the Surgical department for a short time. Then, I went back to Dietary for a few more years and then to Marquette Family Medicine for about 15 years. When the Brain & Spine Center opened there were a few openings there, so I applied and got that job. I was in Brain & Spine for about 12 years and I am now back at Marquette Family Medicine.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
Most of the changes in my position have been computer changes and how things are done. Going from paper charts to electronic medical records was a huge and challenging change.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
In the winter—which is my favorite time of year—I like to snowmobile, snowshoe, cross-country ski and do pretty much anything outside. In the spring, summer and fall we love to camp, ride our side-by-side and e-bikes, kayak, and walk our two Shelties. I also keep very busy with my Tastefully Simple side job.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
Meeting new people, and I have made a lot of friends throughout the years—many that I keep in touch with from all of the departments that I have worked. The most important thing I enjoy outside of work is spending time with my four grandchildren as much as I can!
