What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am a licensed practical nurse (LPN) for UP Medical Group – Family Medicine | Lakewood.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I entered into the healthcare field later in life. I was a stay-at-home mom and decided to go back to work after my children were in high school. I was inspired by my good friend and fellow LPN, Teresa Benam. She had recently become an LPN and was very happy with her decision. I’m thankful for her guidance and support.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
A typical day as a clinic LPN is making sure our patient’s needs are met to the best of my ability. I ensure they understand their medications, ordered tests, and lab and imaging results. While patients are in the clinic, I do intake, vitals, confirm current medication dosages, and relay any important information to our providers. We consult with insurance companies, durable medical equipment companies, pharmacies, home health and other healthcare facilities. We field a myriad of phone calls and portal messages throughout the day, prioritizing patients' needs.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have been an LPN for 20 years. I started as a nurse on the Neuro/Ortho/Peds floor at the UPHS – Marquette (then Marquette General Hospital) then transitioned to the clinic setting six years later. I worked at Marquette Family Medicine until settling into my current role.
What are some of the biggest changes you have experienced in this position?
Recently, pharmaceuticals have been challenging. The ever-changing medication formularies, prior authorization systems and medication supply issues keep us on our toes most days.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
Local gems are Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and the hundreds of hiking trails and waterways the area has to offer. My husband and I are avid hikers, kayakers, snowshoers, and golfers and we love to travel. I’m a new grandma so traveling to see our granddaughter is important.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
Helping our patients navigate the healthcare system and understand their healthcare is very satisfying and important to me. I’ve also worked with so many incredible coworkers who I’ve witnessed making impactful differences in patient’s lives. They make me a better nurse and I truly appreciate their guidance and support.
