UP Health System – Marquette Earns Renewal of American College of Radiology (ACR) Accreditation
December 13, 2023
UP Health System – Marquette (UPHS – Marquette), a Duke Lifepoint hospital, has again been awarded a three-year term accreditation in radiation oncology as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Radiation oncology (radiation therapy) is the careful use of high-energy radiation to treat cancer. A radiation oncologist may use radiation to treat cancer or to relieve a cancer patient’s pain.
At UPHS – Marquette, board-certified radiation oncologists provide advanced treatment for a wide range of cancers, offering some of the latest radiation therapy technology while demonstrating a commitment to providing high-quality care for patients.
UPHS – Marquette has maintained its accreditation from ACR for well over ten years.
“These types of accreditations are very important to our hospital, and it’s essential that our patients can access high-quality care, close to home. Renewing the ACR accreditation is evidence of our staff’s continued commitment to the health of this community and furthers our mission of making communities healthier,” said Tonya Darner, chief executive officer, UPHS – Marquette.
The ACR is the nation’s oldest and most widely accepted radiation oncology accrediting body, with more than 700 accredited sites, and 30 years of accreditation experience. The ACR seal of accreditation represents the highest level of quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting specific Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards developed by ACR after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified radiation oncologists and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Patient care and treatment, patient safety, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Radiation Oncology Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report they can use for continuous practice improvement.
The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 36,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.
The UPHS – Marquette Cancer Center offers the following radiation oncology services to patients: intracranial stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS, SRT), stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), reirradiation and radioisotope therapy, image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), and external beam radiotherapy utilizing AlignRT, SpaceOAR, 4DCT and respiratory gating.
