What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am an Acute Care Speech Language Pathologist at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I always knew I wanted a career where I would help people and in college, a roommate talked me into taking a communication disorders class. I fell in love with the idea of assisting people in communicating. Being able to express yourself is invaluable.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
I start my day by reviewing the acute care speech census and chart reviews. I also schedule any modified barium swallow studies with radiology. I then begin with new evaluations and then provide treatment for swallowing and/or cognitive deficits. In between patient care, I also participate in Tracheostomy Rounds in the ICU, complete modified barium swallow studies in radiology, and occasionally see outpatients with tracheoesophageal punctures who need their voice prosthesis changed.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I initially started working here as a full-time speech pathologist in October of 2011, then transitioned to PRN. I have been back full-time as the primary acute care speech pathologist since 2019.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
There have been many changes throughout the years. The first big change was from providing therapy in acute care settings, rehab units, outpatient, and home health to only providing therapy in acute care and the rehab unit. Transitioning to the new hospital was a lot of work, but exciting. The most recent changes have had to do with the COVID-19 pandemic and providing needed therapy while ensuring patients and staff stay safe and healthy.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
Outside of work I love traveling, camping, and listening to live music. My favorite local gem is anywhere there is water… but I look forward to camping at the Mouth of the Huron (by the Huron Islands) every year.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
The rehab team is the best group of coworkers and we all work well as a team. I also enjoy the floor staff that I see daily while on the floors. The people here and knowing I am helping my community members are the best parts of working here!
