UP Health System - Bell Heroes | Mary Hosking, BSN, RN

What is your role at UPHS?
I am the Clinical Care Manager at UP Health System – Bell.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I have always wanted to be a nurse to be able to help people in a time of need, even in the smallest of ways. I also liked the idea that I could build a career anywhere.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
This is my first time working in a clinic setting. A typical day includes following up with patients after a hospital/skilled nursing facility (SNF) stay and ensuring the transition to home is as smooth as can be. I answer any immediate questions or concerns the patient may have, review their medications with an emphasis on new prescriptions, and make sure they have a follow-up appointment with their primary care provider. I also meet with patients in the clinic at the request of their provider for a variety of reasons, usually relating to social determinants of health. During many of the phone calls and interactions, I provide patients and their families with community resources.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
Yes, I started in May of 2022.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
One of the highlights of my career was when I was given the opportunity to be a manager for our quality and population health department.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, being outside, cooking, and reading. Local gems? You can’t beat the access we have to Lake Superior, the Dead River Basin, and countless other lakes, rivers, and waterfalls.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Bell?
The people make it a great place to work — the patients and my coworkers.
