Meet the Doctor: Michael Piggott, DO, Family Medicine
July 10, 2023

Michael Piggott, DO, is a family medicine physician at UP Medical Group – Medical Specialists, located at 1414 W. Fair Avenue, Suite 344, Marquette, MI. He treats patients ages 13 and up with a focus on preventive health and special training in osteopathic manipulation—a technique used to correct structural imbalances in the body and help manage pain.
Q: When did you first think of becoming a doctor?
A: I was exposed to the field of medicine at a young age, as my father also practiced family medicine in Marquette for many years. I would flip through his medical journals and look at the pictures and always had a fascination for how the body worked.
Q: Where did you receive your medical education?
A: I graduated from the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine with a Doctorate in 2019. From there, I was fortunate to be able to move back to my hometown to complete my residency training with the Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program, where I was Chief Resident during my final year.
Q: Why did you choose your specialty?
A: I have had exemplary professors and mentors in all of the specialties of medicine, and I've maintained my curiosity to know more about each. Choosing family medicine was the most natural choice as it challenges you to keep your knowledge up to date in all areas of medicine.
Q: What do you find most compelling about your role as a medical care provider?
A: The biggest draw is being able to connect with patients on such a personal level—whether it is offering relief and reassurance by ruling out a condition, helping patients work through and cope with difficult medical decisions and care, or simply continuing to manage chronic disease. We get a unique opportunity to see others at their most vulnerable, and being able to provide support and build trust is a profound responsibility that I get the privilege of practicing every day.
Q: What drew you to UP Health System?
A: I completed my residency training within UP Health System and enjoyed getting to know and working with all my great colleagues and mentors. It felt natural to stay here upon graduating and continue to build those relationships and teams.
Q: What do you love most about living in the Upper Peninsula?
A: I was born and raised in Marquette, and it has always been my goal to one day return to practice medicine in my hometown. I love that Marquette is small enough to have all the rural benefits with great outdoor recreation while being large enough to almost always be hosting large community-focused events.
Q: What are your interests outside of work?
A: I like to try a little bit of everything. I play soccer, basketball, tennis and golf. I enjoy the outdoors by hiking and kayaking. Reading a book for recreation and not work is always relaxing now and then. I'm decent at cooking, but better at eating. All the while I get to raise my two sons, Lucas and Calvin, and spend time with my lovely wife, Sarah. If there is time to spare between work and all that, I try to catch an MSU football or basketball game—go green!
