Keeping You Moving with Physical Therapy | Norbert’s Story

A few months ago, Norbert Beauchamp told his primary care provider that he felt some pain in his hip, preventing him from being on his feet and moving around as much as he’d like to. A retired heavy machinery and crane operator and born-and-raised Yooper, Norbert was now 93 years old and doing what he could to stay on top of his health and remain independent.
His primary care provider asked Norbert if he’d consider physical therapy – treatment that could alleviate pain by strengthening his muscles. Norbert agreed, and his doctor referred him to outpatient physical therapy at UP Health System – Rehab Services in Marquette.
According to the CDC, regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do to maintain overall strength as you age. A single bout of exercise can bring immediate benefits such as reduced blood pressure, improved mood, and a better night’s sleep. But for some, it can be intimidating to know where to start – especially if you feel limited by pain or an injury. Physical therapy at UP Health System simplifies the process – with treatment programs designed by physical therapy specialists and proven by scientific research.
When physical therapist, Brad Jackson, MSPT, met Norbert for his first appointment, Brad saw that Norbert seemed highly motivated. “Sometimes patients who are struggling to move as easily as they once did lose a little bit of confidence in themselves,” said Brad. “But from the first appointment, Norbert and I became a team working toward the same goals. Not only have we seen great progress in his health, but we’ve also gotten to know Norbert well and look forward to seeing him.”
Twice a week, Norbert arrives by bus for his physical therapy appointments. He has quickly become friends with the therapists and clinicians at the clinic – sometimes sharing family recipes, or his photo album filled with fantastic shots and stories of the Upper Peninsula from his days working in construction.

Norbert believes that his regular physical therapy sessions have helped him in being able to get around with less pain. “I’m able to enjoy living in my apartment, getting around the building and town. I’m also able to visit with family.”
Besides alleviating his hip pain, Norbert also noticed an improvement in the strength of his arms. “Before seeing Brad and Katie, just lifting my arm to reach something felt difficult. Now, look at me!” Norbert laughed before lifting his entire body off the floor on the parallel bars.
