What is your role at UPHS – Portage?

I am a Patient Service Representative at Express Care in Houghton. 

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?

I have always had an interest in Healthcare and wanted to be more involved within the community. I completed my undergrad at Tech in Biological Sciences and have had the opportunity to shadow in various departments in the Portage Hospital. After completing my degree, I knew I wanted to stay within the community and keep working to help others. My goal over the next couple of years would be to start medical school!

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?

A typical day usually consists of registering patients for Express Care and facilitating phone calls throughout the day. Working in this field is fast-paced as we tend to see high volumes of patients and Express Care is one of the few COVID testing sites in the local area. However, at Express Care, we have a strong team and have been able to adapt to higher volumes. 

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?

I have been employed by UP Health System since May of 2021. Previously, I was a full-time student at Michigan Tech and have graduated with my Bachelors of Biological Sciences and my MBA.

What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?

Some big changes would be adapting to new COVID regulations and testing. Before starting this position, I did not have a lot of knowledge about it, but since starting I have learned to easily adapt to the always-changing environment!

What are some of your interests outside of work? What/where is your favorite local gem?

During the warmer months, I love to kayak and hike around the area! Recently, I have been taking road trips and exploring the different national parks around the country! Favorite local gem would be Lindell’s in Lake Linden. It is a breakfast must for my friends and me.

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Portage?

I love being able to interact and help the community on a daily basis!
