UPHS – Portage Heroes | Amanda Baril, Phlebotomist
November 7, 2022
What is your role at UPHS – Portage?
I am a Phlebotomist in the Laboratory Unit at UP Health System – Portage.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
Phlebotomy has always been something that interested me so when I saw an open position, I went for it and have never looked back.
What's a typical day like for you?
I don't think there is a typical day in the lab. Every day is a little different. For the most part, I check patients in, enter orders, and draw blood from patients in the ED, OB, MedSurg, and Outpatient. I love working in this field and I'm constantly learning new things, meeting new people and I love working in a fast-paced position.
How long have you been employed here?
I've been at UPHS – Portage in the same position for almost four years.
What are some of your interests outside of work? Where is your favorite local gem?
My interests outside of work include side-by-siding in my off-road vehicle, adventuring with my family and friends, going to the beach, and spending time with my husband and kids. My favorite local gem would probably be Keystone beach — it's hard to get to so it's a fun ride and usually peaceful out there!
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Portage?
My favorite part about working at Portage is definitely the patients. We have some amazing, kind, fun people in our community! I also love working with coworkers that now have become like family!
