What is your role at UP Health System – Marquette?
I am a Senior Accountant, working primarily with physician services at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
A friend told me about a job that was available, so I applied for it with the hope that it would lead to a job in my career field.
What is a typical day like for you working in this field?
Much of what I do involves provider compensation, something that I truly enjoy. Many of my daily tasks are part of a larger task that comes later. Staying organized and caught up on the daily work helps to make the monthly/quarterly/annual tasks run smoothly. Most days I have a “to-do” list on my desk to keep myself on track. I enjoy the cyclical nature of my job, knowing what is ahead and planning for it.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have been employed here for 18 years. I started off in a clerical support position, and the following year I transitioned into an accounting position.
What are some of the significant changes you have experienced in this position?
Some of the big changes include the addition of new clinics/specialties to include the many new providers, a new clinic billing system in 2015, and of course the move to the new hospital in 2019.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I love the UP with the four beautiful seasons and try to get outside and take advantage of it all. I enjoy a daily walk with my dog, camping, fall drives for leaf viewing, and snowshoeing. Sugarloaf Mountain with its beautiful view of Lake Superior is among my favorite places to be.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
I enjoy being a part of the accounting team very much. My coworkers are my “work family” members. Though we are here to do a job, we are also here to support each other and to celebrate life’s moments.
