What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am a quality lead II at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I grew up in Marquette and knew I wanted to work and raise my family here. I had an aunt who worked as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) in the hospital clinics which provided me the inspiration to pursue my Certificate in Nursing from Northern Michigan University in 2001.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
No day is typical, and I prioritize my day based on deadlines and data requests. I am responsible for tracking and trending the data on all reported falls and inpatient pneumonia cases. I abstract urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and PICC and midline insertions for a BCBS Collaborative: Hospital Medicine Consortium (HMS) which looks at quality metrics and best practices to reduce complications and costs for the patient and facility. I help coordinate portions of the Leapfrog Hospital Survey. The quality department helps support regulatory surveys by scribing and being the command center during the survey.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have worked for the health system for 23 years. I started my career as an LPN on the Medical Oncology Unit at the old facility. I transitioned to the clinics after 10 years and worked in varied clinics; Respiratory Medicine, Pediatrics and Urology. I then worked as a population health coordinator in Clinic Quality Management for three years before I transitioned to the Hospital Quality department where I began my current role as a quality lead about three years ago.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
The biggest change has been moving from paper charting to electronic medical records and the ability to access data.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I am married and have three children. We have three English Setters that keep us busy. I am a volunteer coach for my daughter’s mountain bike race team; Marquette County Interscholastic Cycling (MCIC). I enjoy biking, spending time in my greenhouse and gardening. My favorite local gem is our vast trail systems and community youth bike volunteer organizations—MCIC and 906 Adventure Team (906AT).
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
I enjoy helping to provide the data that showcases the quality of patient care that our providers, nurses and staff provide our local community and beyond.
