What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I’m the Administrative Assistant for Nursing and Volunteer Services at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
Altruism – I’ve always had concern for others and want to help in any way I can. I always knew I would work at a facility where the resource is needed by all. We are all fortunate to have so many of the needed specialties and resources right here in our community.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
Well, what I think I’m going to get done during a particular day can completely change depending on nursing needs. I prepare for and attend several different meetings for several different departments during the month (Pharmacy, Ethics, Quality, Harms, Emergency Medicine, Hospital Supervisors, Nursing Daisy Award, PINE). I onboard and orient our new volunteers for the information desks, operating room waiting area, and pet therapy, and coordinate their schedules. There are several duties involving our large, ever-changing hospital staffing pool. I’m a Handle With Care Instructor. And when the need arises, I jump in to be a Patient Safety Companion.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I’ve been employed at the hospital for 33 years. I started as a transcriptionist for the pathologists, did ICD-9 coding for the Business Office, and did outreach education and Institutional Review Board for the Cancer Program, but have been with Nursing the longest.
What are some of the significant changes you have experienced in this position?
There have been so many significant changes over the past 33 years that I wouldn’t know where to start. Change is constant—there is no stopping it.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
Like my daughter-in-law says, “She only has an ON switch!" When I’m not renovating our house, I could be traveling, camping, dancing, biking, hiking, babysitting, kayaking, gardening…but, I smile the most when I’m with my family. My grandbabies are the gems!
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
I enjoy the volunteers and their selfless dedication to helping our community.
