What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am a Clinical Informaticist in Information Technology at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
It was actually by chance that I ended up in healthcare. I started in Human Resources and moved to IT after a position opened up that fit with my degree. Now I can’t imagine working in any other avenue of the IT world.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
There is not a typical day in IT. Every day depends on the ‘system issues(s) of the day’. Recently, a majority of my time has been spent on issues, troubleshooting, maintenance and setup on both the technical and application sides of the new Cerner world.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I started in HR in 1997 and moved to IT about a year later and have been here ever since. My title has changed a few times, but for the most part, the job duties have been the same.
What are some of the big changes you've experienced in this position?
IT is an ever-changing field but the biggest projects I have been involved with are the move to the new hospital and the recent EMR move from Paragon to Cerner. Both were huge IT endeavors that took a lot of teamwork and time but in the end, were very rewarding to have been a part of.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I just recently had my youngest of three graduate from high school so I am still trying to figure out what my interests are outside of my children’s activities which had taken up most of my free time for quite some time. I enjoy camping, crafting, and spending time with friends, family and pets (5 dogs and 2 cats) as much as possible. I love all the outdoor gems found in the UP.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
I really enjoy the people I work with, both in IT, and the users throughout the organization. This position allows me to interact with so many different people in all aspects of the healthcare system. I have learned so much over the years and made some awesome friendships.
