What is your role at UP Health System – Marquette?
I am a Patient Service Representative III at the UP Health System – Marquette Heart & Vascular Center.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I have always had an interest in healthcare. I was a Med Tech in the Air Force and enjoyed that. I wanted to be involved in the Heart & Vascular office to be able to learn more about our hearts.
What is a typical day like for you working in this field?
I work in the medical records department. My job is to make sure our doctors have all available records from various hospitals and clinics. My typical day consists mainly of research. I need to delve into each patient's chart and make sure every piece of helpful documentation is ready for the doctor. I make many calls in a day to find and retrieve records from all over the United States. I try hard to make sure each and every patient has a complete chart so that the doctor can have everything they need to help the patient.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I started with UP Health System – Marquette Heart & Vascular in 1999 and have mostly been in the same position.
What are some of the significant changes you have experienced in this position?
When I started back in 1999, we had paper charts, a rolling file wall and messages for my coworkers that were put on sticky notes. Technology has definitely changed those practices.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I love photography, taking walks and being with my family. My favorite local gem is Lake Superior for sure. I go there to relax as much as I can.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS–Marquette?
I enjoy my coworkers. We all work hard to ensure our patients have the best experience possible. A smile and a kind word help not just our patients but also each other.
