What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am the social worker in the Specialty Clinic at UP Health System Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
My mom, Judy Smith, was a registered nurse at UPHS – Bell for 40 years and my dad, Jim Smith, was a paramedic and an Ishpeming firefighter. I grew up helping the community and volunteering at D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans. I have always wanted to help others by empowering them to focus on their strengths and moving forward with their lives.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
My typical day at the Specialty Clinic varies; no two days are the same. I work with a variety of pediatric specialty physicians and local team members.
I offer emotional support to patients and their families, provide education about their conditions, and collect information to assist with treatment plans and goal setting. Additionally, I help patients navigate their insurance options, including Medicaid, Children's Specialty Health Care Services (CSHCS) and the Upper Peninsula Health Plan.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have been part of the Specialty Clinic for three and a half years. I worked in the Emergency Department for 2 years and at the UPHS – Bell Express Care for a year before transitioning to the Specialty Clinic.
What are some of the big changes you've experienced in this position?
The Specialty Clinic is expanding. The clinic now offers two additional full-time clinics, Pediatric Physiatry with Dr. Pruente and Maternal-Fetal Medicine with Dr. Racine. We are continuing to add to the services available to provide care for the pediatric population in the Upper Peninsula.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I love crafting, sewing, and spending time with my children. I enjoy creating elaborate costumes for both my children and myself. I also like to go thrifting.
My favorite local gem is AMVETS Post 122 (a veterans charity and service organization).
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
I enjoy working with my co-workers and the services we provide to the community. I truly love that the Specialty Clinic is patient-centered and we provide hope.
