What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am the director of risk management & compliance at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I have always been interested in anatomy/physiology and pathophysiology. Knowing how our bodies work and how they are affected by disease is fun for me, however, I get nauseous if I see blood, etc. I decided to become a coder because you need to have that knowledge to understand the documentation and code a chart, but you don’t have to see any of it.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
My days are always busy and they fly by. My role requires interaction with all departments, which I enjoy. I learn a lot when talking with people about their work and I get to see how everything works together. I often assist with situations that are difficult and need to be addressed quickly. You need to be able to think on your feet. Sometimes my days are fairly calm and sometimes it feels like a million things are happening at once. I have always been able to work well under pressure, keep calm and stay focused which is very helpful in this role.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have been at UPHS – Marquette for 10 years. I began in 2014 as the director of health information management & privacy officer. In 2021 I moved into the market ethics & compliance role. I started my current position in March of this year.
What are some of the significant changes you have experienced in this position?
The move to the new facility is the biggest change I’ve experienced. Something unexpected but fun was working with the Secret Service in preparation for the First Lady’s visit to Marquette. There was a lot of behind-the-scenes planning and collaborating with several departments on short notice. It was great to see everyone step up and we were able to provide everything that was asked of us.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I like to read, I love music—there are always tunes playing in my house or car. I love spending time with my niece and nephew. My favorite local gem is Lake Superior. It is always so pretty no matter when or where you see it.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
What I enjoy most about working here are my coworkers. Even during trying times, humor can be found. Sometimes that is all it takes to turn your day around or make a good day great.
