UP Health System – Bell Heroes | Collin Crane, BSN, RN
September 20, 2024
What is your role at UPHS – Bell?
I am a registered nurse in the Emergency Department (ED) at UP Health System – Bell.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
Beyond the desire to improve and care for the health of others, there was never one specific thing that inspired me to get into healthcare. My dad always pushed me to pursue a career similar to nursing, something about "job security..." I wanted to help others and I had always aspired to travel the country, so nursing felt like a great opportunity for me.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
Every day in the ED is a bit different from the last, which is one thing I like about it. Sometimes you start your shift with a cup of coffee and some time to check your email, and other days you hardly have time to put your shoes on. Working in this field is a lot like riding a roller coaster — full of ups and downs — but I like (most) roller coasters. We rely heavily on our co-workers, and I thoroughly enjoy the connections made and the camaraderie found in often difficult and trying situations.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I've been employed by UPHS – Bell since June 2022. I started in a per-diem position, working a few shifts each month while I was also working as a traveling nurse. I transitioned to a full-time position in April 2024. I also worked in the ED at UPHS – Marquette from 2019-2021.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
Transitioning from per-diem to full-time was a big change for me here. It's been quite different from many of my other positions as an ED RN, but I've enjoyed using my past experiences and knowledge to contribute to and improve the workflow of our department.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
My interests include road/gravel/mountain biking and bikepacking, film photography, exercising with my dog "Dandy," and other miscellaneous shenanigans.
My favorite local gem(s) include swimming by the lighthouse and the little candy eyes you can get on your ice cream at Frosty Treats.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Bell?
Living in the UP! I also like the "small-town" vibe of Bell. Although I'm not originally from the area, working here makes me feel like a part of the community.
