What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?

I am the Oncology Financial Liaison at UP Health System – Marquette.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?

I've always had a passion for helping others, especially those who are uninsured or underinsured. Seeing how many people struggle to access basic care inspired me to be part of a system that works to close those gaps and make healthcare more compassionate and accessible.

What's a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?

I work closely with insurance companies to obtain authorizations, enabling patients to receive the care they need. I also help manage the financial side of things, guiding patients through their out-of-pocket expenses and working to reduce any barriers to treatment. Working with insurance and navigating their ever-changing demands can be very challenging; each one has different requirements, so we’re constantly learning and adapting our techniques. What I enjoy most is being able to ease the stress that often comes with the financial side of healthcare and help patients focus on what really matters, their health and recovery.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?

I returned to work at the hospital just over a year ago in my current role. Previously, I worked here as a financial counselor in the inpatient setting, so while this is a new position for me, I’m familiar with the hospital.

What are some of the big changes you've experienced in this position?

Some of the biggest changes I've experienced have been adapting to the constant updates in insurance requirements and learning the new systems the hospital has implemented. Both have required flexibility and a willingness to continually learn and adjust.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite gem?

Outside of work, I love spending time with my husband, our three children, and four grandchildren. I also enjoy crafting and making the most of “lake time” during the summer. My favorite local gem is actually my home- it never seems like I spend enough time there, and everything I love is there.

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?

I enjoy helping others, solving problems, and building meaningful relationships through my work. Some of the greatest people I know are here at UPHS – Marquette, and I’ve truly enjoyed the opportunity to work with and for such a dedicated and supportive team.
